How to tune a ukulele

You can tune your ukulele two ways with this tool: in real time with your microphone, or by ear with the reference tones. Here is the microphone method, step by step.

  1. Tap Tune with microphone and allow access when your browser asks. On a phone, hold the microphone near your ukulele.
  2. Play a single string and let it ring clearly.
  3. Read the big note display. It shows the note you are playing, and the needle shows how many cents sharp or flat you are.
  4. Turn the tuning peg slowly until the needle sits in the centre and the readout turns green, which means the string is in tune.
  5. Repeat for each string (g C E A). Prefer to tune by ear? Tap any string on the tuner to hear its exact pitch.

Ukulele tuner: frequently asked questions

What tuning is a ukulele in?

Standard ukulele tuning is g, C, E, A. It is re-entrant, which means the 4th string (g) is tuned to a high G above middle C rather than below it, so the strings do not simply run low to high.

What are the ukulele string notes?

In standard tuning the notes are: 4th string G4 (392.00 Hz), 3rd string C4 (261.63 Hz), 2nd string E4 (329.63 Hz) and 1st string A4 (440.00 Hz).

What is the difference between high-G and low-G ukulele tuning?

High-G tuning, the standard, tunes the 4th string to a high G4 and gives the bright, jangly ukulele sound. Low-G tuning replaces that string with a G3 an octave lower for a deeper range. The C, E and A strings stay the same in both.

Do soprano, concert and tenor ukuleles use the same tuning?

Yes. Soprano, concert and tenor ukuleles all use standard g, C, E, A tuning. The baritone ukulele is the exception: it is tuned D, G, B, E, like the top four strings of a guitar.

How do I tune a ukulele with this online tuner?

Allow microphone access, play one string and watch the display. It shows the note and whether you are sharp or flat. Turn the tuning peg until the needle centres and the readout turns green. You can also tap any string to hear a reference tone and tune by ear.

Can I tune a ukulele without a tuner?

Yes. Tap any string on this tuner to hear the correct pitch and match your string by ear. The notes are G4, C4, E4 and A4 for the 4th, 3rd, 2nd and 1st strings.
